Sunshine – the word itself evokes feelings of warmth, happiness, and positivity. This week’s word of the week is sunshine, and it’s a reminder of the powerful effect that sunlight can have on our minds and bodies.
Living in a place like Northern California, we can often take sunshine for granted. But when it’s been days, weeks, or even months since we’ve seen the sun, we realize just how much we need it. I recently had the opportunity to take a trip to Palm Springs and soak up some much-needed rays, and it was truly amazing. I felt more alive, happy, and energized than I had in weeks.
But why is sunshine so important? As it turns out, there are a ton of benefits to spending time in the sun. According to WebMD, some of these benefits include better sleep, stronger bones, improved mental well-being, weight loss, eye health, skin health, and even treating jaundice. And let’s not forget that sunshine is the best source of vitamin D, which has tremendous health benefits.
It’s easy to understand why some people might be hesitant to spend too much time in the sun – concerns about skin damage and skin cancer are valid. But the key is to find a balance. Spend some time in the sun, but take necessary precautions to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
So if you’re feeling down, lethargic, or just need a little pick-me-up, try spending some time outside in the sun. Even just a few minutes can make a huge difference in your mood and energy levels. And don’t forget to get your vitamin D levels tested at least once a year – it’s an easy way to ensure that you’re getting all the benefits that sunshine has to offer.
As Helen Keller once said, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” Let the power of positivity that comes with sunshine lift your spirits and energize your soul.
