Hi Everyone,
Recently we became recognized as a Certified Green Business and from my understanding we are the only health & fitness club to be Certified in the Bay Area. We are committed to green practices and have improved our recycling of paper and plastic, conserved energy by installing new lights, motion sensors in the restrooms and limiting lighting in the daylight when not needed. In addition, we have made an effort to purchase recycled office products and are committed to other future green practices. We would like to encourage other business’s to also get Certified with the goal of conservation for the planet and cost savings for the business. It is a win-win for everyone.
In Health,
Brien Shamp

Bay Area Green Business Program
The Bay Area Green Business Program was started ten years ago by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and involved businesses in Alameda County. Since that time, the program has expanded to all nine Bay Area counties.
San Mateo County Program
Last Spring, the Recycle Works.Org division of the County Public Works Department developed a 6 month pilot program to test the program in San Mateo County. The pilot involved 6 cities – San Carlos, Burlingame, Daly City, Millbrae, Redwood City and San Mateo as well as the County and 4 certification categories’ Auto Repair, Hotel, Office and Retail and Restaurant.
Since that time 4 additional certification categories – Dental Offices, Printers, Remodelers and Garment/Dry Cleaning have been added. The program will go Countywide this summer.
Becoming A Certified Green Business
To become a Certified Green Business, a business has to complete an 11 page check list of green practices in the areas of General Standards, Solid Waste Reduction & Recycling, Energy Conservation, Water Conservation and Pollution Prevention. The checklist responses are then reviewed by local agencies responsible for these areas including the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA), PG&E, California Water Service, Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) and the County Department of Environmental Health.
Once these reviews are complete and the businesses have met the program standards, a final review is conducted by the County’s Recycle Works division and the business is then certified. Certification includes a listing in the Bay Area Green Business Directory, recognition at the City and County level and the use of the Bay Area Green Business Program logo in business advertising and on the firm’s web site.
San Carlos Businesses Participate In The Program
In San Carlos, over 25 businesses have applied for the Certified Green Business program. In addition to the 12 San Carlos firms that have received Certified Green Business status, 5 more are in either the review or inspection phase. As additional firms are awarded Certified Green Business status in San Carlos, they will be recognized at future meetings of the San Carlos City Council.
