Happy Friday,
This week I have received numerous times the same forwarded email with a media clip on Super Brain Yoga. Apparently, you can get smarter by doing a simple squat for 3 minutes. Do you have 3 minutes a day to get smarter? Apparently this is good for everyone, but especially those that are older and for kids with autism and learning disabilities.
This movement made me think of the work I have done with various Chi Gong Practitioners, Acupressurists, Acupuncturists and Paul Chek, one of my mentors and an international guru and healer. We incorporate various Chi Gong movements, Zone Exercises and Exercises from the Tibetan Monks because they have been proven to help our clients at the Optimal Fitness Lifestyle Center shift to a parasympathetic state (the state at which the body is relaxed-heart rate and breathing are slowed down, digestion is improved, pain is reduced and a sense of calmness is achieved). Many tend to be in the flight and fight state these days, coping with mental-emotional stress at work, home and with finances. Nutritional and chemical stress are also major problems for our bodies. Nutritional stress occurs when skipping meals and eating processed foods with empty calories. Chemical stress is when we consume animal products with hormones and anti-biotics, fruits & veggies with pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, environmental toxins in the air, water and toxic products on the skin. As you can see, we are all under massive stress; the key is to manage and lower the stress level.
By slowing down the breath by focusing on breathing and with movement we can make a dent in the stress game.
There is a lot of research to support that simple exercises like a breathing squat can improve function, focus and efficiency in the brain. Activation of specific acupressure points from the earlobes during the squat exercise stimulates the brain on the opposite side. Do the breathing squat exercise 21 times with the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. Exhale while squatting and inhale while standing up. Perform this movement with a 555 tempo. 5 seconds down-hold for 5 -5 seconds up. This simple exercise will activate chemicals in the brain, create synchronicity of the hemispheres, activate the pineal gland for awakeness and activate the pressure points of the ear lobes. The combination of crossing the midline, as well as stimulating the pressure points creates a perfect storm of electrical brain activity that stimulates neuropathways and can literally make you think better. For more information on movements that you can do to increase brain function and vitality check out the video on the Five Tibetan Rites:
Carolinda Witt in the video above has her twist on the Five Rites as do many like my Chi Gong Master. However you do them, I am sure you will receive benefit from the breathing, the movement and the time that you have given for yourself .
Lastly, Paul Chek developed the Zone Exercises, which like the 5 Tibetan Rites help to balance energy areas in your body called Chakras. For a free assessment and basic exercise program go to Chek Connect. Then go to Calculate your CHI For Free. After you complete the questionnaires you will receive your program that will help you create balance.
