Nearly 1/3 of All Soda Drinkers are Likely to be Overweight or Obese-New CA Study

Hello Everyone,

I know it is hard to believe, but research shows that there is a link between soda and obesity. I thought it was good for you and your kids also. Who knew? 🙂

Come on now, we all know that sugar, especially processed sugar, is not good for us.  Sugar is a tricky ingredient; it is in almost everything if you are not thinking about what you are eating.  One of the most conspicuous places is inside beverages.  Sweetened beverages including soft drinks, energy drinks and even many fruit juices.  I am not really surprised by the finding that nearly 1/3 of all soda drinkers are likely to be overweight or obese. What is surprising is that many of them do not even realize how much sugar they are consuming by drinking just one soda per day.

The study commissioned by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA), discovered that 41 percent of children (ages 2 – 11), 62 percent of adolescents (ages 12 – 17) and 24 percent of adults drink at least one soda or other sugar-sweetened beverage every day. Regardless of income or ethnicity, adults who drink one or more sodas or other sugar-sweetened beverages every day are 27 percent more likely to be overweight or obese. This consumption is fueling the state’s $41 billion annual obesity problem.

Let me give you some more interesting facts that you may not know about sugar sweetened beverages.

  • The average soda drinker will consume 39 pounds of sugar by the end of the year, simply by drinking one soda per day.
  • The average soda drinker will consume 50 gallons of soda in one year.
  • There are 17 teaspoons of sugar in the average serving of soda (20 0z).

For those of you who are thinking that you don’t drink soda, and don’t really care if people who do are fat, let’s think about our troubled community, state, and its budget woes. Fiscally speaking, obesity is a problem for everyone. The billions of dollars California spends annually fighting obesity could be used elsewhere. Please forward this BLOG and other information on health & wellness to those in need of education. It is to everyone’s benefit.
