On Thursday we had our second session of the Online Group Nutrition & Lifestyle Coaching Program. It’s going to be tough to surpass this one but I will try 🙂
My friend and colleague, Dr. Heidi Dulay was my guest speaker. Dr. Heidi shared her personal story on how she got into healthy eating and teaching nutrition at John F. Kennedy University in CA.
Like many overweight children she was teased. She also battled cancer. Today she is a thriving, LEAN, 70 year old living the world with vitality.
Here were some of her key points in the talk:
- Increase good fat intake to 50-80% of diet.
- Quality of fats is important unlike recommendations from Dr. Atkins in Atkins Diet.
- High Fat/moderate protein/low carb diet is the key to fat loss, weight loss and overall health.
- Consume fat first given its importance and it will make you full. Don’t fill up on veggies.
- Review “Ketogenic Diet”- Amazon: High fat diet shown to decrease seizures and good for overall brain function.
- 3 Phase Program: High Fat Diet, Detox (juicing), Coasting.
- Mini Cycles: Celebration (eat & don’t worry), Comfort, Social Customs (enjoy times with friends/family as needed).
- Intermittent Fasting is beneficial for weight loss and health but need to eat the right foods.
- No need to count calories.
- When at a restaurant avoid the bread and eat the butter.
- Avoid being ravenous.
- Be careful of eating too much protein.

Dr. Heidi sent me these sources for additional reading on Ketogenic Diets:
- A good start would be Maria Emmerich’s “Keto Adapted.”
- Then, either “Ketogenic Diets: Treatments for Epilepsy and Other Disorders” (good history on how keto diets began, and protocol detail) or “Keto Clarity” by Eric Westman and Jimmy Moore (Moore is the popular talk show host who, at 32 years old, weighed 410 lbs. Within a year, he lost 180 lbs, 20” around his waist and went from size 5XL to an XL).
