Do You Know Mr. Addict? (Last Seen At Safeway)

In Fat Loss Tip #37: Eat out less and prepare to eat in more often I mentioned that many who want to lose body fat, weight and improve their health do not make the time to go shopping for food.

It is kind of hard to eat and feel well if you don’t plan & prepare to eat well.

I should have been more specific.

Where do you shop and what are you buying at the store?

Yesterday, I went to Safeway to use their coin machine to exchange Maya’s piggy bank coins for cash.

As I generally do, while waiting in line for the checker, I look at what people have in their shopping carts and what the checker rings up. You know you do that also 🙂 Okay, maybe you don’t. I have another issue to blame my Mother for.

Let’s call the guy in front of me, Mr. Addict.

Mr. Addict purchased a 6 pack of orange soda, a case of Bud Light, a $20 gift card for Starbucks, some white flour sugary things, and then asked the checker for a carton of cigarettes. His grand total for the purchase was around $84.00.

I often think about what I will write next for my articles and I am never let down by those around me.

Everywhere I look, there is a story of interest, but Mr. Addict is a good one. He purchased alcohol, sugar, caffeine and cigarettes at the same time. I have never seen this at Whole Foods,Trader Joes of the Farmer’s Markets and I look often.

He must have been concerned about his health and weight given he chose the light beer, right?

If you are looking to optimize your health and well-being, please do not fill your cart with these items or you will be my next story 🙂

If you are looking to make better choices and you are new at this shopping thing, it is much easier to choose healthier options at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Sigonas (if you live in the South Bay) or the Farmer’s Markets. Of course, you can still get alcohol and sugar; however, you are surrounded by a greater number of healthier food options. Shop the perimeter for the healthiest food choices: produce & animal proteins. I can go into this in greater detail and probably should given the vegetarians are going to send me hate mail, but I am going to keep it this simple for now.

Be careful at the checkout lines and limit packaged foods. Generally, those foods with labels are highly processed and irradiated to preserve the food on the shelf for an extended period of time.

Most of these packaged, processed foods are barely even food any more given they are loaded with chemicals and contain genetically modified ingredients. These foods are best saved for emergency situations given their long shelf life and low nutritional value.

Eat these foods only when our country is under attack, or during an earthquake, flood, tornado or hurricane situation.

If you do eat foods with labels, stored in packages, do your best to make sure they are certified organic.
