Ending the War on Fat (10 Day Summer Detox Sale Extended)

According to the latest edition of Time Magazine (June 2014) on the newsstand “For decades, it has been the most vilified nutrient in the American diet. But new science reveals fat isn’t what’s hurting our health.”
Check out Time Magazine and you will see a good article on why you should consider eating the fat you may have stopped eating in the 80’s and 90’s (if you were around then).

I too grew up with the fear that if I ate fat I would get fat. While in high school and college I worked out approximately 5 hours a day, 6 days a week and I always had a belly. I was frustrated and confused because I thought I was being “healthy” and doing the “right exercises.” After all, I started working out at 12, learned a lot from the local body builders at the time and thought I knew it all. In 1996, I read the Zone Diet, by Barry Sears after a friend in college I had been giving advice to practically reduced his body fat overnight (approximately 10% in less than 2 weeks).

I had been giving him the same advice to lose body fat as I learned in college and the media- eat low fat or no fat foods. After reading the Zone Diet, I learned that my fat free diet and expensive education was possibly the cause of my belly fat, in addition to inflammation, poor recovery (I was always hurt), lack of focus, memory and concentration with my school work. My workouts stayed the same, but I increased my good fats and lowered my carbs. I got leaner, had less pain and learning became easier. Since that time I have been on a mission to learn more about food and how it effects the body. I have learned that food and sleep are by far more important that exercise, even though I have a degree in Exercise Science and I have a great business developing structured exercise programs for my clients.

I encourage you to learn as much as you can about the food you are eating and to make it a priority. Food is not just a calorie. Every time you eat you have an opportunity to create pain or move towards balance. Do your best to detach from sugar, processed dairy, processed grains, caffeine and alcohol as these foods have a high likelihood to cause inflammation, addiction and move you away from balance. They will generally not make you “healthier.” The real question is…how much are they hurting you? Experiment with the above foods and cut them out of your diet for as little as 7 days. At the same time, increase your fruits, veggies, legumes, protein and good fats (avocados, nuts, seeds, olives, olive oil, coconut oil and coconut based foods, butter, high quality animal protein). Notice how you feel.,You will often reduce weight, pain, stress, anxiety, digestive complaints and sleep better.
