Hello Baseball Players, Parents and Coaches,
I have been getting a lot of questions about the Baseball Performance Program:
- What do you do in the baseball performance program?
- What age is best to start off your program?
- How many days per week should my athlete do the program?
- How much does it cost?
- Will my athlete become a better baseball player?
- Will my athlete learn how to pitch better, run faster, throw harder?
- Will this program increase the likelihood of injury?
- What age should my athlete start lifting weights?
- Can a team take the program together?
All great questions, and of course I have answers for all of these questions.
The pictures and videos that make up the Baseball Performance Video were taken at the College of San Mateo (CSM) and the Optimal Fitness Lifestyle Center in San Carlos over the last few years. I am now in my 9th year as the Strength, Conditioning & Nutrition Coach for the CSM Bulldogs and we have won 8 conference titles in a row. The athletes have changed over time and many have moved on to higher levels of play, but the program is still the most comprehensive around. There is no other program in the Bay Area that is specific for baseball players and adapts to their individual needs.
There are 6 Phases for the Baseball Performance Program:
- Self Massage
- Dynamic Warm-Up
- Speed, Agility, Acceleration & Quickness
- Strength & Power Training
- Rotator Cuff Strength
- Core Work
Throughout the entire program, the goal is to target mobility, flexibility, posture and improved motor skill. Without a good foundation of these four variables, we will be limited on what we can do with the athlete. The program or drills will progress in intensity as the athlete improves mobility, flexibility, posture and overall motor skill. The more often the athlete attends the program, the faster he will attain a good foundation and progress to baseball specific strength & power. In a group format, we can effectively work with a number of kids and modify the program based upon their current skill level in most cases. If you have a group of baseball players, contact me with the number of athletes and the preferred time of training.
The Baseball Performance Program is for baseball players ages 8 and up, but programs based solely upon age only do not take into consideration the four foundation variables. It is very common for an 8 year old to have greater flexibility and mobility than a 14 year old, but lack in strength and posture. It is also very common to see the younger kids have better motor skill than the older kids in speed and agility drills because they are able to move more freely with the increased mobility and flexibility that is common before puberty.
The Baseball Performance Program will not teach kids how to pitch or hit a baseball…that is what the baseball coaches are for. Our goal is to find the weaknesses of each athlete and minimize them. We loosen up tight muscles, make joints more mobile and strengthen the weak. Athletes learn how to warm-up based on their needs. We create more powerful baseball players because the demands of baseball are explosive in nature. We teach the athletes how to improve their posture and core strength throughout the day and how to breathe to relax. Lastly, we educate them on the importance of recovery-the need for sleep, unprocessed, primal food, water and rest.
