The word of the week this week is Flexibility. Flexibility is the quality of being able to change or be changed easily according to the situation. The degree to which you are able to change with life’s various situations is your mental-emotional flexibility.
In physiological terms, flexibility is defined as the ability of a joint or a group of joints and muscles to effectively move through an unrestricted and pain-free range of motion. With regard to joints specifically, flexibility is the degree of extension that its tissues are capable of.
We need mental, emotional, and physical flexibility; however, when we have mental-emotional flexibility the side effect is physical flexibility.
In what area of your life are you lacking flexibility?
Have you noticed how your muscles and joints tighten up when you are under stress? Even the muscles in your jaw tighten with stress, which is often caused by the grinding of your teeth.
Can you sit in a deep squat for an extended period of time (feet straight, heels on the ground and butt to the ground). Many seniors can sit deeply in this position in other countries, but most young American’s can’t? Is this because we sit too much, move too little, or because we lack the flexibility due to our overwhelmed, over-connected mental-emotional state? Hmmm?
I have seen the relationship between mental-emotional-physical stress in my coaching clients for years. I have also felt the pain myself. When we feel stuck in life, we also tend to have aches and pains. It’s quite amazing to observe when the mental-emotional stress reduces, so does the related physical pain.
This week consider trying on a different approach and be flexible in a situation where you might otherwise resist. ‘Be clear about your goal but be flexible about the process of achieving it.” Brian Tracy.
