Lessons Learned From Pokémon Go (That Can Help With The Achievement Of Your Goals)

I hope your day and the start of August are going well!
I just finished teaching my last session for the day. Before I shut down the computer for the night I want to share a couple lessons I learned today which came about from a great article I read on Inc.Com on the success of John Hanke, the creator of Pokémon Go.

Heard of it ?

For those not familiar with Pokémon Go, it has exploded like nothing the world has ever seen. Even faster than wildly popular games Angry Birds and Candy Crush to become the biggest mobile game in US history.

So I downloaded it, just to see what’s up. I gotta admit I don’t really get why people are so addicted. I mean I understand the concept (capturing Pokemon characters in a augmented reality environment – techy talk for animated creature show up when looking through your camera phone), I just don’t get the appeal.

I guess I can chalk it up to being old, and I can just add that to the long list of things I just don’t get (like why anyone cares about any Kardashian).

But the Pokemon game does have one remarkable feature, one saving grace that should be applauded: It has gotten people off of their arses and moving around. This is lesson #1 I got today

Sure, some have walked off cliffs or whatever in search of elusive Pokémon, but chances are they were going to do that at some point anyway. (It’s a joke, relax)

Lesson #1: Playing the game has gotten people moving! I think that alone deserves praise. So am I saying you should download Pokemon GO and track down as many of those crazy little guys as you can? Uh, no, but as I always say, some movement is better than no movement as long as you don’t get hurt.

Although it seems as though Pokémon Go was an overnight success, this article by entrepreneur Roger James Hamilton shared the incredible 20-year journey of John Hanke and his creation.

How did John Hanke create such a massive overnight craze? Check out the 10 times he leveled up in his lifetime to reach Pokémon Go: “What Overnight Success? Pokémon Go Took 20 Years to Take Off According to its Creator”

What does this have to do with the achievement of your goals? Fat loss goals? Health goals? Financial goals, etc.?

Regardless of the goal, most are not an overnight success. According to one of mentors Bedros Keuilian, “Too many entrepreneurs overestimate what they can accomplish in 3 months and they underestimate what they can accomplish in 3 years.” You can replace “entrepreneurs” with everyday “people” wanting to achieve any goal.

We live in a day of instant gratification and often become frustrated and quit when we don’t see results. Success is often right around the corner, but you will never know if you give up!

Lesson #2: Keep the end in mind, but focus each day on simply leveling up.
