Fat Loss Tip # 30- Don’t Try To It Alone!

Happy Sunday!

We get a lot of the same people each day at my boot camp program. These campers have a routine. How is your routine (Fat Loss Tip #21)?

I often ask people why they are not working out or living a healthy lifestyle. I commonly hear two objections:

1. Lack of Time
2. Lack of Money

Well, the money part is no longer part of the equation for my Saturday class, so maybe it is time? 7:30 am is fairly early. There is plenty of time to do other things after class???

The question of why more people are not at my Saturday class can be answered in my Fat Loss Tip #20- Commit to Something. I wrote about values in this tip. More are not in attendance on Saturdays simply because fitness is not of high enough importance in the grand scheme of things at that point in time for that person.

Time & money are not really valid objections. What you really want in life determines what you do with your time.

If you really want or need something, you will likely find a way to get it.

My point of today’s tip is not to promote my Saturday class.

My objective is to get more people to be physically active, especially in Silicon Valley. Way too many computer science experts and engineers sitting at a desk for 15 hours per day (I know there are many other experts out there working long hours at the desk also). The goal is to accumulate 30 minutes of movement per day- Fat Loss Tip #22. I know you can break away from that cpu, but we need a plan.

I already wrote about the need for a routine and scheduling fitness events– Fat Loss Tip #27. Here is another tip to help you get on a regular health & fitness program: Fat Loss Tip # 30- Don’t Try To It Alone!

My buddy Tara has been working with me for a while and she has recently moved to SoCal. She loves the Belmont Boot Camp and has done both Detox Programs with great success. Check out her Testimonial here: Tara

Now that Tara has moved her Bay Area routine is gone and she needs a new one in SoCal. She has been very successful with the group model but she hasn’t found another boot camp she enjoys. She has found it really hard to motivate herself to work out alone, which is a common problem even for me. There is a reason why people are generally not successful just by getting a gym membership.

We are social creatures and we do best in community.

Although I have some great ideas for others I coach, I would have a lot more trouble living a healthy lifestyle if it wasn’t for my wife. My wife and I both do the shopping and cooking (yes, she does more) and we are on the same wavelength. We rarely distract each other from our health & fitness goals, which is rare, as I have witnessed with partnerships. It seems as though it is very common for couples to be on different wavelengths when it comes to food and exercise. Many times are own spouses are often the primary obstacles in our health & wellness.

We all need a partner with a like-minded perspective and if you don’t have one get one ASAP.  I am not telling you to divorce your spouse if they are an obstacle; however, you may need a new partner if you are to succeed with your health & fitness goals.

I highly recommend finding a buddy. There are lots of buddies just waiting to be found 🙂 Many want to get fit and they are waiting for someone just like you who also needs a friend and support.

Many hire Personal Trainers for this primary purpose, but that is an expensive buddy and can work, but if there are no other social support structures, it is likely to fail.

Here are some recommendations to give you the support you need to be successful with your health & fitness:

  • Find like-minded people to hang out with. If you are reducing alcohol and junk food, you may need to hang out with new friends that support your new lifestyle.
  • Check out Craigslist– look for exercise partners in community and personals.
  • Go to www.meetup.com– there is a group for everything and most are FREE. I have my own group called Optimal Fitness Lifestyle. This group that has weekly boot camps, yoga, hikes, raw food events and more. Most events are FREE. To sign up: Optimal Fitness Lifestyle
  • Put a Facebook out there looking for exercise partners
  • Join a group exercise program like one of my Boot Camps, CrossFit, yoga, pilates, martial arts, tai chi, running group, etc.
  • Sign up for a  gym membership only if you join with a friend that will go with you, you enjoy the classes or you like one of their Personal Trainers. Just doing the treadmill or elliptical is generally a waste of money and super boring with little fitness benefit. However, any movement is better than none.
  • If you do join a gym, schedule the classes in your weekly schedule to be successful. Don’t wing it. Try all the classes and see what works for you.
  • Find a highly qualified Personal Trainer- I can set you up with one as needed.
  •  Get a dog. Research shows those that have a dog achieve their recommended daily amounts of movement.
